Romania: Roxen
Roxen immediately gets a stack of credit from me for the super pun usage. For those new to the pun world "Alcohol you when I'm drunk" really means "I'll call you when I'm drunk" but she sings "Alcohol you" instead of "I'll call you". And this is particularly nice as alcohol is actually one of (if not the) top causes of people being drunk. While my knowledge of Eurovision over the decades is pretty limited, I do not recall many other songs to utilise puns like this. And in celebration of the word play here are my thoughts on our Romanian offering....
It ales me to say, but wine the hell wouldn't you be a bit more whiskey in your song. Vodka-d make this gin-erally a bitter song would be if she looked in cider, found some more energy and sangria-lly high or something. You get one chance tequila Eurovision performance but she just seems JD-ed and rum down. It may be Cointreau-versial but I'll eat Mai Tai if this is the best Romania can do. It leaves me champagne at the bit for a better song....
So much better! This is straight on the "Eurovion favourites" playlist and challenging for the top points.
I'm a sucker for positive messages about mental health and self image and battling and beating our demons. I love the shouting at and fighting with and subduing of her pyjama-clad demon backing dancers. I'm also a sucker for dyed hair and so, whilst my colourblindness causes me uncertainty re the exact colour, I am a big fan of the blue or purple or similar hair! (NB. Roxen is still only second in my list of favourite Romanian hair dyers and will need to work very hard to usurp the 1998 World Cup team)
It will be interesting to see how they stage the teenage angst. It would be entirely fitting and I'd love it if she performed in a hoody but I suspect a costume designer somewhere is insisting on something a little more stylish.
Roxen is now sat alongside Montaigne on my biggest improvement bench and I hope she does really well this year.
