Slovenia: Ana Soklic
Howdy, Slovenia!
Ana Soklic has said that this song does not have a single meaning or theme. This suggests that, if you sift through the lyrics, either you will find multiple different meanings or you will not find any meaning. I'm no expert in poetry but I reckon it's the latter. There is a highlight for me though with the lyric "A torn-up chair stands there....awaiting someone, awaiting a child." I mean, that's beautiful....or spine chilling.... or something.
It has to be said I am a big fan of Slovenia's slight apathy to the competition here. "Everyone else is writing meaningful lyrics? Nah. We'll just take a screenshot of the Fridge Magnet Words once the toddler's finished playing with them and that'll be the lyrics. Everyone else is making expensive music videos? Nah, we'll just borrow the set from Who Wants to be a Millionaire and film her singing there. Outift? I dunno, maybe something white."
Despite lacking meaning, Ana clearly has a very powerful voice and sings this well but it's not one of my favourite 2020 performances.
At an initial glance this is much of the same from Ms Soklic- a bit of a ballad, a handful of lights, her white dress and cape is now a white jump suit with half cape. But we have a clear message of perserverence and overcoming which is a welcome improvement on the jumble of water metaphors from last year.
And the key thing here is that it's just a better song. We get a full on gospel feel for some added whoomph. They've even treated us to some fire- yes, more fire, always more fire! And, blow me down, it's a key change. Yes, yes, yes! Job done, Ana. Good work! Take the last 30 seconds off and just stand around drinking in your great success and let the choir wraps things up.
This is a definite improvement on 2020's entry and I really like it but that just highlights that I am clearly out of touch with the rest of the world as the bookies have this at 999/1 least favourite song to win. What do I know?! Nothing apparently.
